In Color Theory, I wanted to explore perspective, most specifically, how people of color are perceived in different avenues of life. In the manner that Jonathas de Andrade’s O Piexe reconstructs the gaze in order to confront the ethnographic documentary form, I attempt to recreate multiple perceptions of Blackness in order to create an environment in which one’s own self perception and intrinsic bias towards others is challenged. Acknowledging the vast difference between the actual realities of Blackness and the constructed conception of what Blackness is within media leads to a sort of mental schism in which a person of color has to embody opposite characterizations in order to function within society.
